The covered walk follows the river beneath carved wooden eaves darkened by age and weather. Blue lanterns hang farther apart here, leaving pools of shadow between them. One side opens to the water through a rhythm of columns; the other is lined with small gardens, stone basins, benches, and paper-screened rooms set back behind narrow verandas. The crowd thins to pairs and solitary walkers. Someone has left a stack of folded blankets on a bench with a handwritten sign that amounts to TAKE ONE IF YOU ARE COLD. Near the river rail, an elderly couple share a pot of tea without speaking while watching floating lanterns drift below. A small garden at the end of the walk surrounds a twisted pine growing from pale gravel. Its branches have been trained outward over the river for so long that the tree seems to be leaning deliberately into the reflection of the moon. Nothing here asks to be solved. It is simply quieter than the market on the other bank.
