The right-hand landing is smaller and more practical, built around boats that work the opposite bank after the main market begins to quiet. Brass lamps hang from short posts. A chalk board lists downstream stops in several scripts, though the times beside them have been rubbed away and rewritten often enough to become a grey fog. Passengers wait on narrow benches with baskets, instruments, wrapped bundles, and sleepy children. One boatkeeper is repairing a split oar with cord and resin while another pours tea from a battered metal flask into three mismatched cups. Across the water, the market glows red and gold. From this angle its noise arrives softened and out of sequence: first laughter, then music, then the sharp clatter that probably caused the laughter several seconds earlier. A tiny brass bell hangs beside the mooring post. Nobody rings it. Every arriving boat seems to know when somebody is waiting.
