The bridge rises gently over the river, wide enough for two streams of pedestrians and still somehow occupied by people standing still. Vendors have learned to fit themselves into every widening of the parapet. Steam from chestnuts and tea mixes with the cold damp smell of stone. At the crest, the three groups of musicians can finally hear one another. They are not playing the same piece, but after several minutes their rhythms begin accidentally interlocking. A cluster of dancers has formed in the middle and is taking credit for this development. The opposite end of the bridge disappears into a neighborhood of narrow balconies and late kitchens whose open windows throw rectangles of warm light onto wet paving. From the highest point, both banks and most of the lantern river are visible at once. Directly below, the reflected full moon sits in the current like a dropped coin too large for anyone to retrieve. Pedestrians give that patch of light a little extra room without ever looking conspicuously at it.
