Stone stairs descend from the bridge approach to a narrow riverside walk only a little above the waterline. The underside of the bridge turns the music overhead into a warm, distant thunder of footsteps, bass notes, and occasional applause. The path is damp and cool. Small lamps are set into the retaining wall at ankle height, illuminating moss, old flood marks, and niches containing cups, flowers, coins, and folded scraps of paper. Nobody nearby appears to be collecting them. A low stone bench faces the river from beneath the central arch. From here the market lights fracture across the current, and the impossible moon reflection becomes elongated enough to look almost like a road. A stray dog sleeps under the bench with the calm entitlement of something that has correctly concluded the city belongs to it.
