Beneath the bridge, a sheltered landing holds half a dozen narrow skiffs tied close together. Musicians use the stone ledge between sets, drinking tea, restringing instruments, and pretending not to listen when another group above starts a song they know. An old brass brazier gives off enough heat to dry gloves and warm hands. Beside it sits a crate of mismatched cups and a dented kettle maintained communally by whoever notices it first. The river here is dark except where lantern reflections reach beneath the arch. The moon-reflection does not enter the shadow of the bridge. It stops at the edge of darkness with an unnervingly clean boundary, resumes on the other side, and nobody remarks on that either. One violinist has written a tiny set list on the back of a ferry receipt. The final item is simply: SOMETHING EVERYONE KNOWS.
