across the fallen trunk

The fallen redwood is wide enough to cross without balancing, its upper surface softened by moss, huckleberry, and two young trees rooted in decayed wood. On the far bank, the muddy patch holding the four-toed prints lies beneath sorrel and sword fern. The trail continues only a few body lengths before the impressions disperse across roots and needles and can no longer be followed with confidence. No established path replaces them yet. Beyond is dense, ordinary-looking forest with no authored route through it. This edge is intentionally open to building. Someone who wants to decide where the lost tracks go may continue the forest from here. Cross the trunk again to return to the creek hollow.
