down where the creek runs

The downhill route is barely a path at first, only a tendency in the ferns and a slight compression of the duff beneath them. The sound of water strengthens gradually until the ground levels into a narrow creek hollow shaded by alder, maple, and younger redwoods. The creek is clear over dark stones, rarely more than knee-deep, moving in alternating runs and quiet amber pools. Fallen branches collect moss and leaf litter into small islands. In one place a redwood has fallen across the water and remained there long enough for huckleberry, fern, and two young trees to root along its upper surface. The trunk makes a broad natural bridge. Upstream, the creek disappears around a bend under leaning trees where the air looks almost blue with shade. Downstream, sunlight flashes more strongly through the canopy and the water grows louder over stone. On the far bank, a set of prints crosses a muddy patch and vanishes into sorrel. Four toes, no claw marks, larger than a fox and smaller than anything that ought to make the creek feel dangerous. They are fresh enough to hold a little water.
