The glazed door opens into a small rain-dark courtyard enclosed by old walls and vine-covered balconies. A square basin catches water beneath the eaves. One side holds a locked residential door; another is only blank masonry. Opposite the entrance, however, the paving narrows into the beginning of a street that has never quite been completed. There are no shops yet, no lamps, no house numbers, no story about what lies farther on. The first few stones simply continue into unwritten ground. The unfinished street ahead is a deliberate frontier. Travelers may continue into it; builders who reach its edge may decide what comes next.
