where the grass reaches the shore

The black sand and fine shingle continue, but the storm line thins until low coarse grass begins within a few strides of the wet shore. Between the grass roots lie pale splinters of driftwood, dry wrack, and small rounded stones pushed above the ordinary wash. The ground here sits only slightly higher than the long dark shore behind. In midday light it is easy to see that the grass is not invading the beach so much as meeting a stretch where the beach itself has narrowed. Each wave reaches less far inland before withdrawing. A faint shallow depression runs parallel to the water just inside the grass. It is damp but not flooded. Farther ahead, that depression bends seaward and disappears behind a low grassy rise.
