the low northern reef

Following the broad impressions north across the exposed flats leads to a low reef that would ordinarily be underwater. Black ribs of stone rise between clear channels full of weed, small crabs, and trapped silver fish. The impressions cross two shelves of rock, become briefly sharper in a patch of coarse sand, then end at the edge of a deep tidal channel where the water is already beginning to rise. Nothing waits on the far side and no onward route is marked. Return across the flats before the tide decides the schedule for you.
