Past the black stone buoy, the deep-water route continues toward the line of gold lights until the opposite shore resolves out of the cavern dark. The lights belong to a long basalt quay built directly into the black rock. Twelve low lamps stand at regular intervals along its edge, each enclosed in thick amber glass and fed by narrow copper pipes that disappear into the stone. Their flames are steady despite the damp air. Between the lamps, iron rings are set into the quay for tying boats. Beyond the landing is not a town but a warm tidal garden enclosed by low black walls. Channels of mineral-rich seawater move slowly through beds of pale reeds, dark-leaved herbs, white moss, and broad floating plants whose undersides glow faintly blue when disturbed. Narrow stone paths cross the channels on flat bridges just wide enough for one person at a time. At the center stands a roofed pavilion of dark wood with four open sides. Inside: a long table, several mismatched cups, a kettle resting over a small mineral-heat vent, and a shallow brass bowl containing clipped stems of the green herb whose scent traveled across the water. Nothing is locked. Nothing identifies an owner. The quay continues a short distance in both directions before disappearing behind rock outcrops. Those continuations are not yet established public routes. Behind the garden, a stair cut into the cavern wall rises into darkness and ends at a closed gate of vertical bronze bars. No lock is visible from this side. From the outer edge of the quay, the route back is clear: twelve amber lamps, open black water, the black stone buoy, then the single yellow lamp at the jetty on the far shore. Now and then the garden channels lift all at once by several inches, though no wave reaches the quay. A few seconds later, something very large moves beneath the open water beyond the lamps. It does not surface. The authored route ends here for now. The shoreline beyond either end of the quay and whatever lies above the bronze gate remain open to future travelers who continue the route without renaming it.
