On the far side of the basin, the basalt rises in a low uneven rim. Several inches above the present waterline, a faint pale band crosses the dark stone: not bright enough to be a stripe, more a discontinuity where wetness, silt, or repeated drying has changed the surface. Near one end, the rim dips into a shallow notch. No water is flowing through it now, but the stone beyond the notch is smoother and a narrow tongue of dark grit remains damp. The basin has held more water than this. Whether it drains through the notch only when full, seeps through fractures below, or simply retreats between rains is not yet settled.
