the dry runnel

Beyond the low notch, a shallow channel runs for a short distance through black gravel and broken basalt. It is dry enough to walk, but the deepest line is darker than the ground beside it and small pockets beneath stones still hold cold water. The channel does not gather into a stream. Farther on, it spreads into porous rubble and loses its shape. This looks less like the basin's ordinary drain than a route for excess water when the rain has filled the hollow high enough to spill.
