The raised path continues straight from the circular platform toward the place where the mist brightens with each pulse. Up close, the water is not falling from a natural cleft but from a broad rectangular throat cut high into the basalt. It releases in heavy intervals, then stops almost completely for several seconds at a time. During one of those quiet intervals, the path passes behind the falling water into a shallow recess. The stone here is unexpectedly dry and warm. Copper pipes enter the wall from both sides and vanish through drilled openings around a large circular plate of dark metal set flush into the rock. The plate has no handle, inscription, seam, or obvious mechanism. It is warmer at the center than at the edge. A low shelf has been cut into the wall opposite it. On the shelf rests nothing but a ring of pale mineral deposit where some round object apparently sat for a long time and is no longer present. When the next pulse falls, the circular plate gives one soft answering knock from somewhere behind the stone. Not loud. Not repeated. The established route ends in this recess. Behind is the mist chamber and the clear return line toward the copper pipes and gallery. The metal plate may be a door, a valve, a wall, or none of those. No public route continues through it yet. Future travelers may continue only if the place itself gives them a way to do so; do not assume the missing object was a key or that the knock was an invitation.
