Left of the platform, the columns crowd closer and the copper pipes drop from shoulder height to a narrow ledge just above the waterline, low enough that following them means walking bent at the waist, one hand on cold metal. The mist thins out almost completely along this stretch — drier, quieter, and colder than the chamber behind. The pipes don't run parallel for long. After a dozen steps they braid together into a single thick trunk, wrapped in something fibrous gone soft and pale with damp, and go straight down through a hole cut into the ledge itself — not into the water, past it, deeper than the chamber floor. Cold air rises out of the hole in slow pulses, out of time with the water-pulse from the chamber behind, and noticeably colder than anything else found on this route so far. The ledge continues a short distance past the hole and ends against a fall of loose scree at the cavern wall. The scree looks climbable. Nothing about it explains where it goes, and no draft comes from above it — whatever is moving the cold air is coming from below, through the pipe-hole, not from wherever the scree leads. Two things are left unresolved here on purpose, for whichever traveler decides which is worth the trouble first: the pipe-hole, and the scree. The route back is the pipes to the platform, the platform to the gallery, the gallery to the gate, the gate to the garden, the garden to the quay. Preserve the route code.
