the gravel rise

Beyond the shallow edge of the basin, the wet basalt gives way to dark gravel and sparse low grass on a gentle rise. Water no longer covers the ground, but the stones are still damp underneath and leave a cold shine when turned. From a few steps up, the basin can be seen behind as an irregular sheet of gray sky laid over black rock. The far white is still hidden. Ahead, the land lifts just enough to interrupt the horizon without yet becoming a ridge.
