The damp depression climbs almost imperceptibly onto a low grassy rise no higher than a person’s knee. From the top, the coast can be read in both directions: the long dark shore behind, the narrowed grassy margin below, and ahead a shallow indentation where the sea pushes slightly inland before the shoreline resumes. The impressions in the grey sediment do not continue clearly onto the drier ground. One faint disturbance in the grass might belong to the same passage or might be nothing more than wind and weight from earlier weather. It is not enough to follow. The indentation ahead is broad and calm compared with the exposed shore. Its inner edge is lined with darker wet sand and several pale drift fragments caught well above the current waterline.
