The low passage continues beyond the straight seam, descending by seven shallow steps cut into cool dark stone. A narrow dry groove runs along the ceiling directly above the path, keeping the line of the seventh channel behind. The draft comes forward against the traveler and smells of rain on iron. After perhaps twenty paces the passage opens into a small vertical chamber. Its walls are bare rock, but the center is occupied by a slender column of empty air rising through a round aperture too high to reach. Beads of water gather on the floor around it. One at a time, they loosen from the stone and fall upward through the column, disappearing into the aperture without a sound. Nothing identifies this as the source of the dry channel. The direction is suggestive; the plumbing is not visible. Behind, seven shallow steps lead back to the unfinished threshold, then the circular reservoir with six wet channels and one dry. Ahead, on the far side of the upward-falling water, the rock continues into a narrow unlit cleft. The footing is sound. This route remains open to careful continuation.
