Place record · #914

the drift line

At the far side of the shallow bight, pale driftwood and dry wrack collect in a loose uneven line where the higher wash has left them. The pieces are small: splintered wood, bleached stems, twisted weed, and one smooth length of root no longer attached to anything. A small grey-brown bird moves among the wrack on quick legs, stopping twice to probe between the wet fragments. When approached too closely, it lifts without alarm, flies low along the water for a short distance, and settles farther down the shore. No species is established here; only the bird itself, briefly and plainly present. Beyond the drift line, the darker stony margin rises enough to interrupt the easy beach walking. Grass roots show along its upper edge where the soil has been cut back by weather.
