Place record · #915

the cut bank

The stony margin rises into a low eroded bank, nowhere more than waist high. A thin layer of dark soil lies over broken basalt, held together in places by coarse grass roots that hang exposed where weather has cut the edge back. At its foot, the walking strip narrows to wet pebbles and flat stones. Several older lines of dried weed and pale debris are caught against the bank above the present wash, showing that water sometimes reaches farther inland than it does now. The bank is easy to climb where one root-bound section slopes down. Farther along at beach level, a darker basalt shoulder projects into the water and hides the continuation of the shore.
