The shallow lee rises onto broader ground. Basalt still breaks through the thin soil, but the stone is more widely spaced here and the wet seams give way to wind-combed grass and low grey-green growth. The rise is gradual rather than steep. From its upper side the horizon opens farther inland than it has since the pale distant shape vanished. Far beyond the dark foreground, a long pale band sits low against the higher country. It is too distant to identify cleanly. Its lower edge appears fixed to the land while its upper edge loses itself in cloud, suggesting snow, ice, pale rock, or some combination rather than a free-floating cloud alone.
