the higher shoulder

The open lift continues onto a broader shoulder where the ground is firmer and the wet hollows fall behind. Basalt remains, but in scattered dark plates rather than continuous seams, with coarse grass and low grey-green growth between them. A few tiny winged insects move close to the sheltered sides of the stones, appearing only when the wind drops. Looking inland from here changes the distant pale band: a darker ridge now crosses in front of part of it, making the pale feature clearly farther away and tied to higher country rather than floating cloud. Its surface is still too distant to distinguish snow from ice or pale rock.
