Beyond the bottom of the fold, the ground rises more sharply through broken basalt and damp dark soil. Loose stones shift underfoot between larger embedded rocks, and several low boulders interrupt the easiest line upward. The slope is not a scramble, but in places a hand on cold stone makes the climb steadier. Wet soles need care on the smoother faces. The warmer scented air still comes intermittently from above and slightly across the slope, stronger in the pauses between gusts.
