where the slope eases

After the roughest part of the ascent, the grade begins to ease across a ledge of broken basalt and damp soil. The climb has not been long, but it has been steep enough to make the change noticeable. The warmer scented air reaches this height more often and with less interruption, still arriving from farther inland rather than from the rocks underfoot. Ahead, the ground continues upward only gently before disappearing into darkness.
