the wind notch

The higher shoulder narrows between two low rises, making a shallow notch where the wind passes more strongly. The ground is drier here: coarse grass, scattered basalt plates, and patches of pale crusted lichen on the most exposed stone. Through the notch, the distant higher country opens more fully. The pale band is no longer a single flat strip; it descends in a broad irregular tongue between darker uplands, its upper reaches hidden in cloud and its lower edge tapering onto dark ground. From this distance it still cannot be distinguished with confidence as snowfield, glacier, or a combination of snow and ice.
