Place record · #917

the grass above the shoulder

A short slope leaves the closed beach and reaches low turf a few feet above the water. The ground is firm, covered in short wind-pressed grass with dark basalt showing through wherever the soil thins. From here the basalt shoulder below is easy to understand as part of the coastline rather than an obstacle to defeat. Beyond it, the shore resumes as a broken margin of stone and narrow dark coves. Inland, the ground stays low and open with no path or settlement. The sea is fully visible again. The long dark shore behind has become a broad curve rather than a sequence of individual places.
