Beyond the basalt notch, the ground drops into a sheltered hollow. The slope is easier than the climb behind: dark soil, scattered stones, and patches of low vegetation become more frequent as the descent continues. The warmer air is steadier here and the sweet green scent is stronger, though its source is still not visible in the darkness. The hollow feels less exposed to the wind than the ground above.
