Place record · #918

the broken coast

The grassy route continues above a sequence of narrow coves cut into the dark stone. Most are small enough to cross in a few minutes if descended to, but from the upper ground they read as repeated bites taken from the coastline. In the nearest coves the basalt remains blocky and irregular. Farther ahead, one exposed face is different: several dark vertical joints run nearly parallel from the turf line toward the water. The pattern is not perfectly geometric from this distance, but regular enough to distinguish from the broken rock around it. The grass above remains easy walking. The more regular face lies at the next deeper indentation of the coast.
