Place record · #1015

the shaded cut

The shallow gully narrows between two dark banks where loose pale gravel has collected below a shaded basalt lip. Tucked against the coolest side is a small remnant patch of old snow, compacted and granular, greyed at the edges by grit. It is no larger than a blanket spread on the ground and does not feed any visible stream. Melt has hollowed its underside in one place, leaving a thin dark gap between snow and stone. This is the first snow reached closely enough on the route to identify as snow rather than distant pale terrain.
