the gravel crest

A short climb above the shaded cut reaches a low gravel crest exposed to steady wind. The ground is mostly pale angular stone with scattered dark basalt showing through and only sparse coarse grass in protected cracks. From here the higher country separates into layers: a nearer dark ridge, a broad lower valley beyond it, and the pale tongue descending from cloud-hidden uplands farther still. A dirty grey line crosses part of the lower pale surface. It could be debris on old snow or ice, or simply darker ground exposed through it; the distance does not resolve which.
