the high saddle

The gravel crest eases into a shallow high saddle where the wind loses some force. Between scattered stones, a close mat of short turf has taken hold, mixed with low woody stems bearing small rounded leaves darkened toward red-brown at the edges. The plants stay only ankle-high and cluster where the ground holds a little more soil. From the saddle, the broad valley ahead becomes easier to read: darker vegetated floor below, a thin silver line winding through part of it, and beyond that the higher pale country. The silver line is too distant to identify as stream, wet channel, or reflected water.
