The high saddle drops gently toward the broad valley on a long slope of short turf broken by scattered basalt. The stones become less angular as the slope lowers, with thin soil collecting on their downhill sides. Wind still reaches the slope but no longer presses continuously; there are brief sheltered pockets behind the larger rocks. The silver line on the valley floor disappears and reappears as the angle changes, confirming only that something reflective or wet winds through the darker ground below.
