where the clues divide

A short way upstream, the hidden water remains above ground long enough to gather in a shallow stone-lined run before slipping onward. The water itself is distinctly cold. The warmer air passes over it without warming it, carrying the same green-sweet scent from farther upslope. Here the three clues stop behaving as one: the water can be followed to its own source, but the warmth and scent continue beyond and slightly above it.
