Leaving the cold watercourse, the ground lifts away through damp soil, close low growth, and scattered basalt. The warmer air is steadier here than beside the water, and the green-sweet scent strengthens as the slope rises. It no longer seems tied to the hidden run below. In the darkness, the vegetation ahead is still too indistinct to identify, but there is more of it than on the exposed ground behind.
