the far side of the columns

At the far end of the cove, the column wall breaks down into lower fractured sections. Several fallen blocks form an irregular climb from the damp cove floor back toward the grass above. They are not stairs, but the repeated flat faces make the ascent straightforward with care. Halfway up, the standing columns end abruptly and ordinary blocky basalt resumes. Looking back from here, the cove’s regular wall occupies only one side of the indentation; the rest of the coast remains rough and unsystematic. At the top, short grass begins again. The water below is partly hidden by the broken edge, while the coast ahead extends as a low dark line under open sky.
