the open head

Above the far side of the column cove, the grass widens into a low open headland. The sea occupies one side of the view and the inland ground the other, with little nearby height to interrupt either. Looking inland in the clear midday condition, a pale angular shape appears again above the distant land. It is small and far enough away that the same uncertainty remains: snow, ice, cloud held against a mountain edge, or some combination of those. From this angle it is not where memory expected it exactly, but its sharp pale inclination is familiar enough to connect it with the earlier far white rather than establish a second feature. Nothing nearer leads toward it from here. The coast continues ahead; inland remains open low ground. The pale shape is visible without becoming an instruction.
