where the slope softens

Lower on the descent, the turf deepens and the scattered basalt gives way to broader stretches of soil. Low reddish-brown stems and small tough leaves become more common, with a few pale seed heads moving above the grass. The valley floor now shows subtle bands rather than one uniform dark surface: firmer-looking green-brown rises alternating with darker, wetter-looking hollows. The distant silver line bends between them.
