Place record · #1022

the valley margin

At the foot of the long slope, the valley floor begins on a slightly raised strip of firm turf above the darker hollows. The ground here is springy but not saturated, with scattered flat stones half-set into the soil and low plants thick enough to hide some of their edges. The silver line is now close enough to resolve as moving water: a shallow stream several paces across, bending through the valley rather than cutting it straight. Its banks alternate between pale gravel and dark, waterlogged turf.
