where the coast repeats

A little farther along the higher grass, the ground reaches a broad shallow crest. Nothing dramatic marks it underfoot; the change is almost entirely in the view. Ahead, the coastline repeats itself at larger scale: low dark heads extending toward the sea, narrow pale seams of wash between them, and farther still another darker projection softened by distance. Individual coves can no longer be read from here. The coast becomes rhythm rather than inventory. The sea opens wider between the nearer heads. No island or settlement is visible. Inland, the far white remains a small pale interruption on the horizon, still unresolved and now less visually dominant than the amount of land around it. From this crest, the strongest fact is not a destination but extent. There is substantially more coast ahead than has yet been walked.
