the gravel crossing

Farther along the long bank, the stream shallows across a broad bed of pale gravel and dark flat stones. The current spreads into several ankle-deep threads around exposed bars before gathering again downstream. The bank on both sides is lower here, and the firm turf nearly meets across the water. A crossing on foot looks possible in ordinary conditions, though wetter weather could erase the easy route. Up-valley, the broad floor continues toward the higher pale country.
