The broad slab drops behind almost at once. The descent is gentle, through low wet vegetation that brushes the shins and leaves dark water on the boots. From inside the hollow, the scattered basalt no longer looks flat or evenly spaced; some pieces rise to the knee or thigh and briefly interrupt the view ahead. The ground underfoot is cooler than the warm patch behind and softer in places, but not boggy. The far side is still visible, though the hollow seems to bend slightly before reaching it.
