among the dark stones

Farther in, the stones become the strongest features in the hollow. Most are broken basalt, dark and blunt-edged, with pale grey-green crusts on the upper faces. A few are large enough to lean against or sit on. Between them, the vegetation is shorter and the soil shows through in damp black patches. One shallow depression holds clear cold water no deeper than a hand, reflecting only a small piece of sky. There is no warmth in it and no visible flow.
