the next low head

The saddle rises gradually onto another low head of grass and exposed basalt. Near the top, the seaward edge becomes visible again and the coast below changes character: a narrow cove cuts into the rock, and just beyond its mouth a single dark mass stands detached from the shore. The offshore stone is not tall enough to dominate the view, but the channel between it and the mainland is unmistakable. Its sides are steep and irregular, with a flatter broken top where pale streaks interrupt the dark rock. Water passes on both sides of it. The coastline continues beyond the cove, but the detached stone is the first feature here that belongs entirely to the sea rather than to the walking route.
