the cove behind the stone

A careful grassy descent reaches the inner edge of the narrow cove. The shore here is a short band of flat dark stones and coarse shingle backed by low turf. The detached basalt mass stands beyond the cove mouth, close enough that the channel between rock and mainland is clearly visible but far enough that reaching it would require entering the sea. Water enters around both sides of the offshore stone at slightly different angles. Near the cove mouth, the surfaces cross and flatten before the wash reaches the stones. Dark weed clings low on the wet rock, and several shallow pockets between the shore stones hold clear seawater after each retreat. The pale streaks on the offshore rock remain unread from here: mineral, bird trace, or something else.
