the low middle

Near the lowest part of the hollow, the ground levels almost completely. Water has gathered here before, though little is standing now: a dark tide-line of flattened stems and fine silt marks the bases of several stones. The plants are sparse enough that the shape of the ground is easy to read. What looked from the rise like a straight hollow is not. Its floor curves around a low basalt rib, and the far side disappears behind that turn.
