The pale strip is neither grass nor exposed bedrock. It is a narrow band of small light-grey gravel laid across the rising end of the hollow, clean enough to stand out against the black soil and basalt. The band is only a few steps wide and slightly lower at its center, as if water sometimes crosses here after collecting in the hollow. Beyond it, the ground rises more firmly and the low vegetation thins again. From here the hollow behind can finally be seen as one curved basin rather than the straight passage it first appeared to be.
