the long inlet

From the next low rise, the repeating coastline breaks its pattern. Instead of another shallow cove, a narrow arm of seawater reaches inland far enough that its head cannot be seen from here. The near shore bends sharply away from the open sea and continues along the inlet beneath low grass and dark basalt. Across the water, the opposite side rises in a long uneven slope, close enough for its larger rock breaks to be visible but too far for small detail. The water inside the inlet is darker and less visibly broken than the open coast outside it. The route now has a real choice for the first time on this branch: continue along the outer coast by climbing the seaward ground, or turn inland and follow the water's edge.
