Following the inlet inland, the ground lowers closer to the water and the exposure of the outer coast begins to fall away. The grass stands taller here instead of lying pressed flat, and damp soil gathers in shallow pockets between basalt shelves. Low woody growth appears for the first time on this route: dark stems close to the ground, small leaves, no taller than a boot in most places. It clusters where the rock breaks the wind and leaves the open bank clear. Behind, the mouth of the inlet still shows a strip of open sea. Ahead, the water bends slightly and the outer coast begins to disappear from view.
