Beyond the side run, several clusters of waist-high woody growth occupy shallow folds in the terrace. The stems are dark red-brown and flexible, with narrow leaves that silver on their undersides in wind. Between the clusters are open patches of turf, pale seed heads, and a few flat basalt stones warmed by brief breaks in the cloud. The place feels sheltered without being enclosed.
