the broad middle

The terrace and valley floor draw closer together here, forming a broad open middle of firm grassland cut by the stream and several shallow damp swales. The swales are narrow enough to step around and do not dominate the ground. Looking across, the valley spans wide between low dark shoulders. Looking ahead, the higher country appears nearer only because the foreground has fallen away; distance remains substantial.
